Irish welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry has seen his welterweight rivals in action at UFC 322. Now the attention turns to him, as he gets set to stake his own claim for a shot at the undisputed UFC welterweight championship at UFC Fight Night: Tsarukyan vs Hooker in Doha, Qatar.

Machado Garry takes on former undisputed champion Belal Muhammad in a crucial clash for the 170-pound division, as the rising star from Ireland faces off against a seasoned Octagon veteran and former champion, who is looking to bounce back after losing the belt in his most recent outing.

Ian Machado Garry is under the spotlight in Doha

While Muhammad's attempt to rebound forms a big part of the pre-event narrative in Doha, the lion's share of attention ahead of the bout will be trained on Machado Garry. The 28-year-old, who celebrated his birthday during fight week in Qatar, has lost just once in his 17-fight MMA career, and arguably that fight – a unanimous decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 – only served to support Machado Garry's claims that he's a worthy contender at 170 pounds.

Despite his impressive performance against Rakhmonov, he nonetheless suffered his first MMA loss, meaning victory in his next performance, against Brazilian knockout artist Carlos Prates, was absolutely essential.

Machado Garry showed his fight IQ and his well-rounded skillset as he claimed a unanimous decision victory over The Fighting Nerds contender to bounce straight back into the win column.

Ian Machado Garry is ready to face his toughest test

Now, Machado Garry has arrived in Doha for the biggest fight of his career so far. Muhammad offers a stern test for anyone at 170 pounds, and has an impressive list of victims that include Demian Maia, Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, Vicente Luque, Sean Brady, Gilbert Burns and former champion Leon Edwards, who he dethroned at UFC 304 in Manchester back in the summer of 2024.

Muhammad's blend of high-pressure fighting, solid striking in the stand-up and a strong top game on the ground have made him one of the most well-rounded contenders in the division. But after he lost the undisputed title to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 in May, Muhammad is now under pressure to bounce back immediately.

With a super-motivated Muhammad standing in the opposing corner, Machado Garry knows that he's likely to have to withstand some early pressure from the former champion. But the best weapon in Machado Garry's arsenal is arguably his fight IQ, and if he has the former champion well scouted, he has the talent to deal with everything Muhammad can throw at him.

The early odds have Machado Garry as the clear betting favorite, with some bookies listing him as much as a -280 favorite for the bout. It shows the oddsmakers' confidence in Machado Garry's skillset against the former champion.

But, ultimately, Machado Garry's stock will rise and fall on his overall performance on fight night. Victory alone probably won't be enough to see him leapfrog the likes of Michael Morales, whose brilliant performance to defeat Sean Brady at UFC 322 has seen him vaulted up to third in the official rankings, below former champions Della Maddalena and Muhammad. Instead, Machado Garry will need to score the sort of eye-catching victory to make his case undeniable. That means either a decisive finish, or an absolute drubbing on the scorecards.

The spotlight will be on "The Future" this weekend, and that's exactly how Machado Garry likes it. But now, with all the attention on him, it's time for Machado Garry to deliver.
