After his epic conflict with Khamzat Chimaev in April of last year, Gilbert Burns( 20-5) is finally back. He failed to win a unanimous vote, but his stock did not suffer despite giving the prodigy everything he had to offer. After being TKO'd in his title fight with Kamaru Usman( 2021) and winning by a unanimous margin over Stephen Thompson( 1921), that loss brought his final three to 1- 2.
The next opponent for the former title challenger is Neil Magny( 27-9), and despite having faced 28 UFC matches, he hasn't given up on taking on the title. He was back on track after making his own decisions against Geoff Neal( 2021) and Max Griffin( 2022) in response to a decision loss to Michael Chiesa( 1921). He then encountered Shavkat Rakhmonov( 2022), a welterweight prospect who had been submitted in the second round. He recently recovered, though, with a submission of his own against Daniel Rodriguez( 2022).
Magny would undoubtedly be closer to a title shot than ever if he could defeat Burns, but this is an incredibly challenging matchup for him. In addition to his cardio, he will also boast a height of five feet and nine inches, which is where his advantages end.
Burns has some of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu on the entire roster and is a stronger wrestler and more explosive striker. Magny must use his range to keep the distance in order to annoy Burns. Expect him to continuously circle while popping his jab out at will.
We believe this is the Brazilian's to lose, unless Magny catches Burns and rocks him early or has a flawless 15 minutes by defending the takedowns while remaining elusive. Burns can finish him if he is unable to maintain the distance.
Expect Burns to erupt in the pocket and eventually draw the fight to the ground by clinching up. Magny will put up a fight, but Burns' skill and strength should allow him to manage it on the deck and eventually submit.
