Miguel Cruz battled David Grayton in a scheduled 10-round 147-pound bout on November 21, 2017, at The Coliseum in St. Petersburg, Florida. This fight was broadcast live on FS1 as part of the Premier Boxing Champions series.
Cruz came out in round one as the aggressor, establishing his dominance early. In round three, Cruz stunned Grayton in the final 30 seconds of the round and both fighters fell to the canvas as Grayton tried to hold onto Cruz.
After the first few rounds, however, Grayton began to find his rhythm and became more of a challenge for Cruz which caused Cruz to be more cautious and hold some of his punches.
In round eight, an accidental headbutt caused a cut under Cruz's right eye. The fight was paused momentarily early in the ninth round so a doctor could examine the cut. The ringside doctor allowed the fight to continue.
