Carlos Prates Says He’s Fighting Islam Next
Carlos Prates says he's been told he's next for Islam Makhachev and that a new eight-fight UFC deal came with a welterweight title opportunity. But Chael Sonnen isn't convinced the situation is that simple.
Michael Morales appeared to be positioned for the same opportunity.
After his win at Madison Square Garden, there were reports that Dana White told Morales he was next, and Morales was subsequently selected as the backup fighter for Islam's championship fight with Ian Machado Garry. Historically, Chael points out, successfully serving as a UFC title-fight backup has usually led to the next championship opportunity.
So where does that leave Prates?
Chael understands why fans love Carlos Prates, but questions the assumption that he's clearly more popular than Morales and can't overlook Prates' loss to Ian Garry.
Most importantly, Chael doesn't want Prates and Morales fighting each other and eliminating one future challenger.
