UFC plans return to Boston this year

dana-white-95.jpgThe UFC will return to Boston for the first time since August 2010 when it hosts an event later this year.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the plans following this past weekend’s UFC 158 event in Montreal.

“We’ll be going back to Boston this year,” White said. “We’ll do Boston this year. … I said it recently, but it’ll be sooner than people think. I just can’t announce it yet.”

White didn’t have a specific date for the event, though he suggested it could happen sooner rather than later.

UFC 118 took place at Boston’s TD Garden and featured a headliner and rematch between then-lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and ex-titleholder B.J. Penn. Additionally, Randy Couture easily submitted boxer James Toney in the pay-per-view co-headliner.

The event, which also coincided with a UFC Fan Expo, drew 14,168 spectators for a live gate of approximately $2.8 million.

Much of the UFC’s mid-2013 schedule is set. Destinations include Las Vegas; Stockholm; San Jose, Calif.; Newark, N.J.; and a trio of Brazilian and Canadian cities.
