Grice was left in critical condition after a “serious multi-car accident” yesterday afternoon in Shawnee, Okla., according to a statement released Monday by the Oklahoma City Police Department. The 32-year-old Grice is a 5-year veteran of the OCPD.
“Officer Grice was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital, where his status is currently listed as confidential,” the statement read. “The Grice family has asked for privacy as they deal with this sudden and unfortunate situation.”
NewsOK.com reports that Grice was stopped at a red light when he was rear-ended by Michael Monroe, 53, of Oklahoma City. Of the six people involved in the accident, Grice sustained the most serious injuries; according to the report, Grice was the only person involved in the crash who was not wearing a seat belt.
Grice’s friend, Daniel Rubenstein, has been providing updates on the fighter’s condition via Twitter.
“Matt is still sedated. Pupils reacting to light,” Rubenstein wrote in a tweet at 8:09 p.m. on Monday. “Another catscan planned for tonight sometime. Matt’s wife went home to be with their girls.”
Grice’s most recent Octagon appearance came at UFC 157, where he came up short in a contentious split decision against Dennis Bermudez. The R-1 MMA representative was scheduled to face Jeremy Larsen next month at UFC 166 in Houston.
