UFC veteran and Oklahoma City police officer Matt Grice, who was critically injured in off-duty car accident on Sept. 8, continues to make progress as he recovers from a serious brain injury.
KOCO, the ABC affiliate in Oklahoma City, recently did a small update on the 32-year-old fighter.
Grice’s wife, Caroline, told the news station: “We are seeing glimpses of Matt’s personality come back. Matt still has a long road ahead of him but still has such a determination in him. You can still see his fighter spirit and strength.”
Grice, a father of two, was hit from behind during a multi-car accident and underwent surgery.
A Facebook page, Grice Strong, has been set up to update fans and friends on his progress. The following update was posted earlier this week:
Because of the injury mentally Matt has been a bit all over the place. His brain is trying to place information together. We’ve been trying to keep things relaxed as the doctors have suggested and today I saw so many good glimpses of him “still being there”. Particularly today he is really missing his girls. It’s sad of course, but something about seeing that emotion brings me so much joy. Can’t wait for a time when we can sit and relax at home, hear Matt and the kids and all the love and laughter.
The page includes information about an upcoming benefit concert, “Grice Strong” T-shirts and other information.
Grice, a four-time state high school wrestling champion who received a scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, most recently appeared at UFC 157 in February, where he suffered a hard-fought decision loss to Dennis Bermudez. Both competitors won “Fight of the Night” bonuses for the effort.
