LAS VEGAS – Without question, Yoel Romero‘s win over Tim Kennedy on Saturday was UFC 178’s most controversial moment.
Romero (9-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) got a third-round TKO win over Kennedy (18-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) – and he really left him looking worse for the wear. But he got to that third round only after Kennedy brutalized him late in the second – and then had an extra 30 seconds or so sitting on his stool before the third round while there was some confusion between his corner, referee John McCarthy and commission representatives over getting some excess Vaseline off Romero.
Kennedy complained immediately, before the round started, wondering why he wasn’t being given a TKO win for Romero not answering the bell – especially since he was saved by the bell at the end of the second, when Kennedy needed likely only a few more seconds to get a TKO. But after the third started, Romero caught Kennedy and then poured it on to get the stoppage.
Kennedy’s camp plans to appeal the loss.
