For months, fans have been curious as to what's next for Conor McGregor. The former two-weight UFC champ, who hasn't fought since the middle of 2021, has gone from front-page headlines to speculation columns. That changed when UFC president Dana White finally addressed McGregor's situation after the fighter was given an 18-month retroactive suspension for failing to provide his whereabouts for random anti-doping tests. The ruling, which was issued through the Combat Sports Anti-Doping agency (CSAD), left the immediate future of the Irish star in question again.
McGregor’s suspension was not a result of a failed test but rather repeated missed location updates under anti-doping rules. Though the sanction is retroactive, meaning he could compete again by March, the fallout has been dramatic. His absence has dominated conversation not just among fans but across sports media and betting circles, where speculation on his comeback has already reshaped odds as many research how to choose a reliable betting site that offers faster market updates and more flexible wagering options than traditional outlets. For now, his eligibility remains uncertain, and while a return appears likely, nothing is set in stone.
After the last Contender Series event, Dana White was asked directly about the current status of McGregor and the much-rumored White House card scheduled for next summer. He made clear that no matchups have been discussed at this point and that the UFC would not start thinking about planning that card until early next year.
Rather, White kept his answers procedural, saying the organization's anti-doping and compliance officials would decide when McGregor is actually cleared to fight. His comments made it clear that McGregor's situation is still in the hands of the sport's regulating processes, not public opinion and media excitement.
With the speculation still ongoing, the matchup that is most often linked to McGregor is Michael Chandler. The two were lined up to fight last summer in a much-anticipated welterweight match, but that plan fell apart after McGregor pulled out with a foot injury. Since then, Chandler has prepared himself, again and again showing his interest in rearranging the fight if McGregor's status is settled.
Adding to the intrigue, one of McGregor's whereabouts violations was reportedly on the same day that he pulled out of that fight, a coincidence that contributed to even more debate about his professionalism. White has not confirmed or denied the notion of pairing McGregor and Chandler together again, but has alluded that everything would be on the table once regulatory issues are addressed.
If McGregor does make his comeback in 2025, it will be nearly four years since he last fought. The UFC landscape has changed greatly in that time, with new stars emerging and old rivals departing. Still, McGregor's influence hasn't faded.
Even though he has not been winning recently, his capacity to attract attention and reframe narratives of divisions is unrivaled. That's part of the reason any mention of his return rides the headlines and moves betting markets, regardless of how far off it may be.
White's recent comments do mean fans shouldn't expect there to be any concrete news until early next year, when matchmaking for the White House event officially begins. Between now and then, McGregor's focus will likely remain on training, rehabilitation, and clearing all of the compliance hurdles. Behind the scenes, there will be discussions regarding possible opponents whose names include Chandler and other previous champions waiting for the green light. For now, the only thing to be sure of is that McGregor's next fight, whenever and wherever it is, will be one of the largest events that the UFC has put on in years.
As White goes on playing it close to the chest, fans are left to speculate. The story is the same: McGregor wants to fight, the UFC wants him back, but the paperwork and policy still get in the way. The clock is ticking down to next spring, and with each passing update, there is increasing anticipation for one of MMA's most unpredictable stars.
