Yair Rodriguez( 14- 3( 1)) meets his standards quickly. He last fought Brian Ortega seven months ago, but T-City hurt his shoulder in the opening round, which was devastating for everyone. Technically speaking, it was a hollow victory. Prior to that, in a remarkable conflict with Max Holloway( 2021), he lost by unanimous margin.
Josh Emmett( 18-2) has recovered to have the best run of his career after having his skull broken by Jeremy Stephens( 2018). He needed a year to recover, but he recovered with victories over Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic in 2019 and Shane Burgos and Dan Ige in 2020 and 2021, respectively. He and Calvin Kattar have now reached a split decision to set up this impromptu title fight.
While Alexander Volkanovski has a date with the lightweight champion at the top of the card, these guys compete for the interim strap. This belt has no significance, but it gives them a chance to win the featherweight championship, and the matchup is fascinating.
Both of them are captivating but different strikers. Rodriguez can hurt you with anything and anywhere, whereas Emmett is a small, technical boxer with an intimidating right hand.
Rodriguez is extremely difficult to prepare for because he has a full arsenal with all eight limbs. However, Emmett's aggressive, unconventional style leaves his chin exposed, and his right hand only requires one connection. Rodriguez must therefore play this carefully and respect the power disparity.
He can cause a lot of harm and knock Emmett to the ground if he uses his range and can keep moving while keeping him at bay with his kicks. Emmett will attempt to accept damage as he approaches the target in order to get in the pocket and deliver a knockout blow.
Given Emmett's strength and the opportunities Rodriguez will create, particularly in the later rounds, you cannot rule him out, but since the majority of this will remain on the table, the Mexican must be supported.
We anticipate him to knock Emmett's legs out while surprising him with kicks and knees in the middle. Emmett is the wise choice given the circumstances and should drag this to the bell.
