Cody Garbrandt, who is now in charge of the prelims rather than the main event, has experienced a bumpy drop in the rankings after once reigning supreme as the division's champion.
Trevin Jones, who will face him, has made some of the toughest unranked fighters in the UFC thanks to his own experience in this division.
Raphael Assuncao was knocked out by Garbrandt, who has excellent boxing, and it wouldn't have looked out of place on a Top Rank or PBC main card. That was, however, his lone victory in six fights, a string that began with his loss to TJ Dillashaw in the title match.
Jones is also experiencing a losing streak. He has lost his last three fights to opponents who are near the top of the UFC rankings, such as Javid Basharat and Raoni Barcelos, after winning his first two matches in the competition( the first of which was overturned to a no contest due to an alcohol test).
Jones' ability to strike is his strongest suit, and it can serve as a release from prison. He clearly lost the opening round in his fight with Timur Valiev, but he was able to stop the second round with a vicious right hook, ground, and pound.
This conflict appears to be a strikers' delight with significant ramifications given that either man could be fired from the organization if they lose.
A wild style only works if you can avoid taking damage, and Garbrandt has shown that his striking defense is extremely suspect, so I would give Jones the advantage given that he was knocked out in four of his most recent five losses.
