ORLANDO – From the outset of their meeting, Estevan Payan and Alex White agreed to stand and slug it out, throwing punches and kicks with abandon.
Short-notice replacement White came out ahead in the end, catching Payan in mid-flurry with a punch that floored him early in the first.
The featherweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 11 event at Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on FOX.
The bout was called off at the 1:28 of the first round after a defenseless Payan took several unanswered punches as he lay against the cage. He immediately leaped up to protest, but in reality, the final punch he took woke him up.
White, who stepped in for an injured Mike Brown, put his speed on display with a series of kicks and spinning backfists, one of which set up a straight left that caught Payan on the chin and set the fight’s end in motion.
“I was pretty nervous with this being my first fight in the UFC,” White said. “But once you get in there, you think, ‘Man, this is just like training,’ and everything just starts kicking in. I was able to connect with some pretty good shots and that was it. I thought the stoppage was pretty fair. He was pretty defenseless, so I think the ref made the right call.”
White (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) remains unbeaten in his professional career and makes a successful octagon debut, while Payan (14-6 MMA, 0-3 UFC), who faced three opponent switches before the confirmation of White, remains winless in the UFC and could face a pink slip.
