Mizuto Hirota and Teruto Ishihara hoped to settle things to the point one of them would have a UFC contract.
That didn’t happen. Instead, after a split draw in their “Road to UFC: Japan” featherweight tournament final, both Hirota (17-7-2 MMA, 0-2-1 UFC) and Ishihara (7-2-2 MMA, 0-0-1 UFC) were given contracts with the promotion.
The two scrapped for 15 minutes, but at the end, Hirota got a 29-28 from one judge, Ishihara a 29-28 from another, and the third called the fight a 29-29 draw. Although the fight was supposed to feature a sudden-victory round in the case of a draw to determine an ultimate winner, a mixup didn’t allow that to happen.
The featherweight bout opened up the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 75 event at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 2.
