BOSTON – Is six straight wins at welterweight good enough to get a title shot? Matt Brown now has posed the question, and he’ll wait for the UFC’s response.
Brown picked up the most dominant win of his nearly two-year run when he knocked out Mike Pyle – who had been on a run of his own – just 29 seconds into the first round. And afterward, he wondered if that might be good enough for a shot at the 170-pound title.
The welterweight bout took place today at UFC Fight Night 26 at Boston’s TD Garden. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.
Brown opened with a leg kick, then a pair of jabs and a left hook to the body. A right hand landed flush, and Brown backed it up with a knee to the head.
With Pyle on the ground, Brown wasted no time. He landed six right hands on the ground – the latter three the ones that really mattered, leaving Pyle out cold.
“Mike Pyle is good enough to be champion – a lot of people don’t know that about him,” Brown said. “He’s better than (welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre), I can guarantee you that. Where you at, Georges?
“I knew Mike Pyle, how good he really is. So I was like, if I let him get comfortable in there, it’s going to be a dogfight. So let’s go balls to the wall, straight up. That’s how I fight anyway, so right on.”
St-Pierre defends his title in November against Johny Hendricks. Pyle currently is ranked No. 12 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA welterweight rankings, with Brown an Honorable Mention. But there surely will be some shuffling following Brown’s dominant victory.
Brown (18-11 MMA, 11-5 UFC) won for the sixth straight time. Pyle (25-9-1 MMA, 8-4 UFC) had a four-fight win streak snapped and lost for the first time since a TKO from Rory MacDonald more than two years ago.
