LAS VEGAS – Sheldon Westcott needed an impressive performance at UFC 195 and he utilized his superior ground game to run through Edgar Garcia to get his career back on the winning track.
The welterweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC 195 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 1 and a main card on pay-per-view.
Garcia (14-5 MMA, 0-4 UFC) opened up the fight with hard punches to the body, but it took little time for Westcott (8-3-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) to duck under a winging overhand right and utilize a takedown to put the fight where he wanted it. Westcott quickly moved to improve his position, wrapping up Garcia’s legs and moving toward mount before punches allowed him to take the back.
After taking the back, Westcott opened up with a non-stop flurry of punches that forced the referee to jump in and call a halt to the bout at the 3:12 mark of Round 1.
The victory snapped a two-fight losing skid for Westcott and gave Garcia his second consecutive defeat.
