In a prepared statement, UFC and Etihad Stadium officials expressed sympathy for victims of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and said safety protocols are being reviewed for today’s massive UFC 193 event.
“We have been advised by Victoria Police there is nothing to suggest that tomorrow’s event will in any way be impacted by the events in Paris, but it is important to note that precautions are being taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all in attendance,” the statement, posted on Etihad Stadium’s website, reads.
The statement added that “risk assessment and planning process” takes place before all events at Etihad Stadium, the largest arena to host a UFC event.
Tonight’s pay-per-view event could break the UFC’s attendance record, which UFC 129 set in 2011 with 55,724 spectators at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. In UFC 193’s headliner, women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) takes on Holly Holm (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), and in the co-headliner, strawweight titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) meets Valerie Letourneau (8-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC).
An outpouring of support has followed six coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris, which reportedly killed at least 128 people, wounded scores and prompted the government to close its borders.
