UFC 189 results: Cody Pfister survives kicks, takes decision from Yosdenis Cedeno

LAS VEGAS – After spending the first few minutes of the fight absorbing kicks to almost every surface on his body, Cody Pfister remembered his wrestling and got to work grinding out a win against Yosdenis Cedeno.

On the strength of his performance in rounds two and three, Pfister (12-4-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) outworked Cedeno (10-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) to earn a unanimous decision victory (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

The bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC 189 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 1 and a main card on pay-per-view.

Cedeno started quickly and seemed in control while the fight remained on the feet early on. With a dynamic attack that mixed in a wide variety of kicks, Cedeno kept Pfister guessing and chasing for much of the first round.

In the second, however, Pfister managed to catch up long enough to nab a takedown, and that established the blueprint for the rest of the fight. Cedeno couldn’t quite stop the takedowns, nor could he get Pfister off him when the fight hit the mat. As Pfister advanced to take his back and then transition to the mount, the best Cedeno could do was not get submitted.

After that display in rounds two and three, it was an easy call for the judges, all three of whom gave it to Pfister two rounds to one.

With the win, Pfister gets his first victory in the UFC, bouncing back from a submission loss in his debut in February. Cedeno has now lost two straight.
