To Get a UFC Call, Brian Camozzi Knows He Has to Take Care of Business at RFA 43

Coming off of what was one of his worst years in terms of productivity in 2015, welterweight prospect Brian Camozzi has turned things around in 2016, and is so far having one of his strongest years yet.

After signing with the RFA, Camozzi has picked up two straight wins for the promotion, getting finishes against Tyler Milner and Kenneth Glenn respectively, raising his current winning streak to four in a row.

“I came out (against Milner) and we just kind of got after it right away, and I was able to get a quick submission,” Camozzi told MMAWeekly.com. “Right after that, the RFA seemed to like that and be happy with me, and things seemed to take off from there.

“Dana White was there (at the Glenn fight) on the ‘Lookin’ for a Fight’ show, so that was nice as well to have him there. I was kind of worried, I thought I was going to a decision because we went into the third round, but I was able to set up a head kick and get the knockout there. So it was a great way to start the year.”

Knowing that White was attending his bout against Glenn was a big thing for Camozzi, but he did his best to not let the attention get to him, and instead focused on the fight.

“It was something I tried to put in the back of my head,” said Camozzi. “I didn’t really want to focus on it. I was more focused on going in there and taking it like any other fight.

“But afterwards, looking back at it, it was by far the best thing that could have happened. That was a huge boost. As long as I can keep that momentum rolling, I think good things could be coming soon.”

Camozzi (6-2) will look to keep his winning streak going when he faces off against Nick Barnes (11-1) in a welterweight title fight main event at RFA 43 on Friday in Broomfield, Colo.

“From what I can tell of Nick, I think we’re pretty similar,” Camozzi said. “Maybe not necessarily in how we approach things, he tends to shoot for the takedown a little more than I would, but in the sense that we’re both willing to do whatever it takes in a fight to get the win.

“We’re not afraid to go the ground or bang away. I think it should make for an entertaining fight.”

Winning a title in the RFA could be the final piece of the puzzle that leads Camozzi to the UFC. But much like his fight in April, Camozzi is putting everything aside and has his mind set on Sept. 9.

“If I come out healthy and everything is good, I’ll try to rattle off another one by the end of the year,” he said. “But whatever happens, happens. I’m just trying to stay focused on the task at hand.

“(Going to the UFC) is always in the back of my head, and it’s always a possibility, but at the same time, you’ve got to get the job done first. I’m just looking at this fight, and if good things come after it, great, if not, we’ll go back to the drawing board and keep taking fights until we get there.”
