TUF 17 Finale results/photos: Daniel Pineda quickly submits Justin Lawrence

LAS VEGAS – Justin Lawrence’s striking is prolific, and opponents such as Daniel Pineda know it all too well.

So Pineda scored a quick takedown, quickly worked for dominant position, secured an arm and scored an efficient 95-second submission victory over the featherweight.

The bout kicked off The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale preliminary card at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It streamed on Facebook ahead of additional prelims on FUEL TV and a main card on FX.

Pineda wasted little time in getting a takedown. Although Lawrence fought his way back to his feet, Pineda quickly took him back to the mat and then isolated an arm. As the kimura attempt torqued his arm, Lawrence grunted in frustration and pain. Unfortunately for the veteran kickboxer, he never escaped the hold, and Pineda ultimately forced a tap-out moments later.

The stoppage came just 95 seconds into the fight.

“I’ve been saying all along that I’ve got to go in there and finish tonight,” Pineda said. “The goal was to use my wrestling because nobody has really seen those skills from me in the UFC. I put him against the cage and secured the takedown. I’ve been working a lot on locking up submissions out of that position, so luckily I was able to secure the kimura and finish him. I haven’t gotten a ‘Fight’ or ‘Submission of the Night’ bonus, so hopefully tonight is the night.”

Pineda (18-9 MMA, 3-2 UFC) ended a two-fight skid with the victory and moved his UFC record back over .500. Lawrence (4-2 MMA 1-2 UFC), meanwhile, now has lost back-to-back fights since a big UFC debut that netted him “Knockout of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” bonuses.
