Sorry, Conor McGregor fans: Joseph Duffy has no current plans for return to 145

GLASGOW, Scotland – Unless a certain Irishman moves up to lightweight, you can probably stop pining for a rematch any time soon.

Joseph Duffy signed with the UFC and debuted earlier this year backed by one big bit of notoriety: He was the last fighter to beat Conor McGregor.

That win came in 38 seconds in Ireland nearly five years ago under the Cage Warriors banner. (Watch the full fight from Cage Warriors 39 here.) McGregor hasn’t lost since, and a week ago became the UFC’s interim featherweight champion. On Saturday, Duffy (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) submitted Ivan Jorge (26-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) in the first round at UFC Fight Night 72 and earned a $50,000 bonus in the process.

But even though he’s fighting at lightweight, he still gets the inevitable questions about a rematch with McGregor. But for now, keep dreaming – Duffy has no plans to drop down.

“I’m going to stay at 155,” Duffy said after his win over Jorge, which took place at SSE Hydro in Glasgow as part of the UFC’s debut in Scotland. “I’m pretty comfortable here, and I feel like I can improve a little bit. So I think this weight is perfect.”

After becoming the first fighter to submit Jorge, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Duffy has his sights set on the UFC’s return to Dublin, which is scheduled for Oct. 24.

“I just quietly do my own thing,” he said. “I know in time, I’m going to keep putting in those performances and they’ll take note. That’s what we’re in the game for – we’re here to fight the top guys in the world. So whoever they put in front of me, I’ll be glad to be on that Dublin card, whoever it is. … That’s a dream come true if I headline Dublin. That’s the kind of fight I want to be in.”
