BOSTON – UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm will soon attempt her first title defense, but it won’t be against Ronda Rousey. Is that the right move?
That’s the question we posed to fellow fighters from tonight’s UFC Fight Night 81 card, which airs on FOX Sports 1 from Boston’s TD Garden.
In her first fight since dominating Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and taking the belt in November at UFC 193, women’s bantamweight champion Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) meets resurgent contender Miesha Tate (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in UFC 197’s pay-per-view co-headliner on March 5. It’s a major event – one that includes lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos (25-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) vs. featherweight champ Conor McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) in the headliner – but should Holm have stuck with the UFC’s original plan of an immediate rematch with Rousey?
UFC President Dana White recently ruled out that option for July’s UFC 200 event due to Rousey’s filming schedule, so the likely big-money rematch is on hold.
Is Holm better off fighting and not waiting? Check out the above video as fellow fighters, including champ T.J. Dillashaw and ex-titleholder Anthony Pettis, give their opinions.
