ONE FC champ Shinya Aoki tweets successful cut featherweight

shinya-aoki-scale-featherweight.jpgVeteran lightweight Shinya Aoki apparently is ready for a drop down to featherweight.

The ONE FC lightweight champion, who won the title in April with a submission victory over Kotetsu Boku, recently tweeted a picture featuring three things: two feet, a scale, and a readout of 65.8 kilograms, which converts to 145 pounds.

“Hello featherweight class!!!” the Japanese fighter tweeted.

ONE FC has given no definitive plans for Aoki’s next fight, though it looks like it’ll come in the featherweight division.

Currently, Aoki (33-6), who also owns DREAM’s lightweight title, is on a 10-1 run that included a ONE FC-debut win over Arnaud Lepont. The lone setback came to Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 66, though he also lost a mixed-rules bout to Yuichiro “Jienotsu” Nagashima at DREAM’s “Dynamite!! 2010? event.

ONE FC’s featherweight division currently is ruled by Koji Oishi (24-9-10), who claimed the belt with a knockout of Honorio Banario at ONE FC 9 in May.

Although he’s competed occasionally for Strikeforce and Bellator, the 30-year-old Aoki is one of the few top-ranked fighters who hasn’t set up shop in North America and has navigated the sometimes-unpredictable world of Japanese MMA.

Currently, Aoki is ranked No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA lightweight rankings.
