Miesha Tate Announces Her Retirement at UFC 205 | MMAWeekly.com

Miesha Tate has been fighting for the past decade, but she’s had enough. 

On Saturday night at UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Tate decided it was the end. After dropping a unanimous decision to Raquel Pennington, Tate announced her retirement.

“I want to say congratulations to Raquel, I’m really proud of her. She was a member of my team, and I’m excited to see her do so well,” said Tate.

“But I’m announcing my retirement, you guys. I love you all so much. I’ve been doing this for over a decade. Thank you so much for being here. I love this sport forever. It’s not my time anymore. It’s the future’s time.”

Tate reached the pinnacle of the sport earlier this year when she took the UFC bantamweight championship from Holly Holm at UFC 196 in March. Her reign was short-lived, however, as she dropped the belt to Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 in July. 

She gave it one more shot at UFC 205, but couldn’t overcome the onslaught of Pennington, who had been a charge of hers when Tate coached The Ultimate Fighter opposite Ronda Rousey.

As she said, “it’s the future’s time.” Tate just doesn’t appear to have the drive she once did, which is necessary when fighting at this level.

“I had a lot more to give, but I just couldn’t pull it out of myself. It’s been a long time, taking a lot of punishment. I love you guys, but this is it for me.”
