Joanne Calderwood: All the fans want to see me vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk

GLASGOW, Scotland – While making the perfunctory pass to the UFC on her next opponent, the victorious Joanne Calderwood is looking at a title shot within her next two fights.

Calderwood (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who picked up her first official UFC win with a decision over Cortney Casey (4-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 72, welcomed a fight with women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the near future.

“Yeah, if that fight happens, I don’t think both of us will be taking it to the ground,” she said at Saturday’s post-event presser at SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. “All the fans want to see that fight, and obviously, speaking for myself, I want to see that fight, because she’s put on a master class with other girls, so it’s a fight that excites me.”

Whether she qualifies just yet for such an opportunity is another matter. As she pointed out, her recent record isn’t necessarily one that begs a title shot. After making it to the semifinals on “The Ultimate Fighter 20,” she outpointed Seohee Ham in the show’s finale only to be submitted by newcomer Maryna Moroz in her subsequent appearance.

Saturday’s win did not come easy, either. In her fight with Casey, she was badly rocked by a barrage of punches and might have been rescued had she not initiated a clinch to clear her head. The bout wound up earning “Fight of the Night” honors for an extra $50,000 to each fighter.

As Calderwood pointed out, she has some work to do before she can reasonably make big requests. And Jedrzejczyk, who this past month made her first title defense by battering “TUF 20? semifinalist Jessie Penne, is a big one.

“I’ve just lost and just won tonight, so basically, maybe another win or two – it’s up to the UFC,” she said.

That doesn’t mean a girl can’t dream, though.

“Yeah, I would be excited for that fight and it would be a standup war,” Calderwood said.
