Frankie Edgar: ‘I Do Feel I Won That Fight’

Frankie EdgarFormer UFC lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar believes he did enough to retain his belt against Benson Henderson in the UFC 144 main event in Saitama, Japan on Saturday.

Of course, the three cage-side judges disagreed, scoring Henderson the unanimous winner.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Ben.  He did a great job, but I do feel I won that fight,” said the former champion during the UFC 144 post-fight press conference.

“He came hard.  I knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I thought I did enough to win those rounds.”

Edgar would like an immediate rematch with Henderson, but Anthony Pettis seems to be the frontrunner for the next title shot.

Henderson lost his WEC lightweight title to Pettis back in December of 2010.  Pettis delivered a highlight reel knockout finish over Joe Lauzon in the first bout of the UFC 144 pay-per-view earning Knockout of the Night honors.  There’s a natural storyline built in with a Henderson and Pettis rematch for the UFC title.

Following the event, UFC president Dana White was asked what Pettis’ win over Lauzon means in terms of a title shot.  “I think he’s going to get it,” he said.

Edgar doesn’t want to trample on Pettis’ toes, but believes he should be granted an immediate rematch with Henderson.

“I’m not trying to shoot anybody out of anything they deserve, but I had to do two immediate rematches, so what’s right?” questioned Edgar.

B.J. Penn and Gray Maynard were given immediate rematches with Edgar after he defeated Penn by decision to obtain the lightweight title and fought to a draw with Maynard at UFC 125.
