Dana White Dissing Soccer as "Least Talented Sport" is Funny: Fan Reaction (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Cheryl Ragsdale,

UFC President, Dana White's casual comments have started another controversy—this time over one of the world's most beloved sports, soccer. Football or "footy" as it is affectionately known outside of the 50 states, is hardly a sport for the "untalented".

Soccer fans are as passionate about their sport as MMA fans are about theirs, @JayMatthewsMMA "At least [our] rugby players don't need pads and helmets. How can you diss soccer/football Pfft! Shame on you Mr White."

Dana knows how to keep people's focus on his favorite sport saying on Twitter, "I know, I knew that one would fire people up :)" and "lol don't get all butt hurt about my soccer comments" and "…here come the Aussies :)"

Soccer fans are volatile

Soccer fans may be more polite than MMA fans based if that response is as salty as it gets. Or are they?

After Dana announced that Silva-Sonnen 2 would take place in a soccer stadium in Rio, I started to worry about how MMA fans might respond. I addressed the issue in this post: Will Silva vs Sonnen in Rio Soccer Stadium Seating 80,000 Result in First UFC Riot? Fan's View

Undoubtedly some MMA fans are soccer fans too. Soccer fans get disruptive when things don't go their way. Wear your protective riot gear if you are going to be anywhere near the stadium or seated somewhere in the stadium—if and when Sonnen wins.

Obviously, Dana's opinion is just his opinion

Add Dana's comments about soccer to the list of don't hang on Dana's every word or else you're going to end up offended. "I'm not a big hockey fan. But I respect how talented you have to be to play hockey. Soccer? That's a whole other ball. Can't stand soccer. It's the least-talented sport on Earth. There's a reason three-year-olds can play soccer. When you're playing a game when the net is that big and the score is 3-1 (and that's a blowout) are you kidding me? You know how untalented you have to be to score three times when the net is that big?" source

Least talented sport? Buff dudes with crazy footwork and deep cardio running back and forth on the field controlling a ball—that works for me. No, I don't watch soccer, but I do appreciate the athleticism and skill of the players.

UFC fighter, Kenny Florian played soccer in college. When teaching kicks in class, I've heard Kenny say to me, "…act like you're kicking a soccer ball."

What's next, cricket?

Why stop with soccer? Come on, Dana. Add guys who play cricket to your list of "untalented" athletes. Let's get the cricket people's knickers in a knot too.
