Bellator welterweight Brent Weedman has retired from mixed martial arts competition.
Following three-and-half-years under the Bellator banner and competing in five of the promotions tournaments, including one at lightweight, Weedman has called it quits with a 22-9-1 professional record.
The initial announcement came from Weedman’s representatives at SuckerPunch Entertainment.
“We are sad to announce that @BellatorMMA standout @brent_weedman is retiring from MMA. Brent called us over the holidays to let us know this was a hard decision for him and he is very grateful for all the opportunities he has had along the way,” read the SuckerPunch statement.
“With the latest addition to his family, Brent wants to simply focus on being a dad, husband and his post fight career. It has been a pleasure working with Brent and watching him climb the ranks in Bellator. We look forward to what the future holds for Brent and his family and wish them all the best! You will always have a home at SP if you decide to come back Brent! Cheers!”
Weedman consistently fought at a high level in Bellator, making it to the semifinal round in two tournaments and the finals in another. He now steps away to focus on his family.
“I’ll miss stepping into the ring professionally, but I gained much in my life from the experience,” Weedman wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
“In the words of @RenzoGracieBJJ ‘I will die (expletive) on my pants like everybody else, but knowing who I was, you know? Knowing for sure and truly who I was.’ Osu.”
