LAS VEGAS – Chris Weidman had to survive a scare against Vitor Belfort to successfully defend his UFC middleweight championship, but once he took over the fight, he took it over for good.
Belfort (24-11 MMA, 13-7 UFC) connected with some very big shots early in Round 1, at one point landing a big flurry of uppercuts to the chin of the champion in the clinch. Weidman (13-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) got through the bad spot and scored a takedown moments later.
Once the fight hit the floor, it was over. Weidman attacked from half guard, moved to mount and fired away with shots until the referee was forced to call a halt to the action as Belfort turned to his side and covered up.
Check out the video highlights of the fight, which aired on pay-per-view from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
