NSAC To Investigate The Jones-Cormier Brawl, UFC Says There Will Be Ramifications

The Nevada Sate Athletic Commission plans to investigate the UFC 178 Media Day altercation between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, and the UFC is also prepared to hand out sanctions.

“This is certainly not a proud moment for the UFC organization,” Kirk Hendrick, the UFC’s Chief Legal Officer, told UFC.com. “We expect more from our athletes, especially these two gentlemen, who are very well-trained and highly educated professionals. Their actions were clearly a violation of the UFC’s code of conduct.”

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has requested a video copy of the brawl, which took place at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on Monday as the fighters were brought on stage for a customary face-off for the media.

UFC cooperated fully and hopes for a swift resolution with regards to potential penalties for both fighters. After the commission takes action, the UFC reserves the right to dish out further punishments.

“We are going to reserve our right to penalize both fighters after the commission has made a decision,” said Hendrick. “We expect more from our athletes and we are prepared to levy sanctions to reinforce the appropriate behavior.”

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries to the fighters or anyone else in attendance stemming from the scuffle.

“There are going to be ramifications,” said Hendrick. “Whether you’re the champion, or this is your first fight in the UFC, there are going to be ramifications from the UFC for these actions.”
