After brawling his brothers, Mark Glover turns attention to Cage Warriors 54

mark-glover.jpgWelsh lightweight Mark Glover comes from a family that includes seven brothers, and thus, he’s used to fighting.

Before he ever set foot in the cage as an MMA fighter, he scrapped with his own.

“We would just always be fighting and messing about, so I always loved fighting,” Glover (6-1-1), who meets Lewis Long (6-2) at Saturday’s Cage Warriors 54 event, told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). Their main-card bout streams live on MMAjunkie.com from Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.

But it wasn’t until one of Glover’s brothers, on a break from scrapping, came home with a UFC DVD that he became interested in the sport.

“My older brother came back one day with an ‘Ultimate Knockouts’ DVD, and I saw Shonie Carter do this spinning backfist of Matt Serra,” he said. “There was a little gym nearby, and I just went to it.”

Several years later, Glover is an up-and-coming fighter in Cage Warriors, and several of his brothers box. A few of them will be there for his fight, which he expects will be as tough a scrap as from his early days.

“I’ve seen Lewis a few times,” Glover said. “He’s tough. He’s well-rounded, and I’m under no illusions (about this fight). I’m just going to see how it goes. I see me being the better fighter and getting the win.”

Now based out of Liverpool, Glover, who made a short-lived appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter 15,” said his skills have come a long way from his days in Wales at the local MMA gym.

“There’s a lot of top talent,” he said of his U.K. home. “There always has been. There’s always has been great fighters to come from the city, even in boxing. It’s a real fighting city, and there’s a lot of future talent coming out as well. It’s a really good place to go for MMA training and fighters.”

With three straight pro wins under his belt, Glover hopes to eventually capture the Cage Warriors lightweight title, which was left vacant by now-UFC featherweight Conor McGregor. Long, meanwhile, hopes to rebound from a submission loss in his most recent Cage Warriors appearance, which snapped a four-fight win streak.

Although Glover boasts five submission wins on his pro resume, he said he’s ready to fight Long at any range.

“I prefer a knockout or a TKO,” he said. “But as long as I get my hand raised, that’s the main thing.”
