It wasn’t long ago that Kenny Robertson found himself on the outside looking in when the UFC was cutting roster spots after merging with the WEC.
Only one fight into his Octagon career and he was released following a loss to Mike Pierce at UFC 126.
Well now an injury has opened up a spot for Robertson to return to the UFC as he will step in to replace Jon Fitch and face Aaron Simpson at UFC on Fuel 4 in July.
Sources close to the match-up confirmed the bout to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday.
Following his release from the UFC, Robertson’s manager Nick Thompson admitted that it was extremely tough finding fights for him due to his record and reputation.
“We got a couple of fight offers, somebody will call me looking for a 170lber, and I’m like we’ve got Kenny Robertson, we’ll take it for the money they’ve offered so we’re not arguing about anything like that, then the opponent will say ‘nope’,” Thompson said.
Things didn’t get much easier for Robertson after that, but he did get one fight last October where he knocked out fellow UFC veteran Lucio Linhares with a spinning back fist to get on the winning track.
Now with Fitch out of action due to a knee injury, he will step in to face Simpson in his welterweight debut on July 11 in San Jose as part of the UFC on Fuel 4 fight card.
