Vitor Belfort 'embarrassed' by Chael Sonnen-Wanderlei Silva 'TUF: Brazil 3' brawl

vitor-belfor-ufc-on-fx-7Vitor Belfort‘s body might be adjusting to a life without testosterone-replacement therapy, but his voice is working just fine.

Belfort took to Facebook on Monday night to condemn the brawl between Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen that broke out on the set of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3.”

“The cat fight between Silva and Sonnen embarrassed me,” wrote Belfort in Portugese.

Belfort, who served opposite Silva as a coach on the inaugural season of “TUF: Brazil,” said the coaches made martial arts look bad when they suddenly came to blows prior to a weigh-in during filming. (A Silva coach, Andre Dida, also jumped in the fray and punched Sonnen in the back of the head.)

“Firstly, MMA is not fighting people not prepared inside the Octagon,” he wrote. “That’s what I do. Secondly, there is no more room for a sport like MMA to accept this behavior when [the sport] has clear rules for anti-sport attitudes both inside and outside the Octagon. Third and most importantly, MMA cannot, ever, influence behaviors where the discussion ends in aggression as if this was the appropriate model of behavior. Millions of young people suffer violence inside and outside the school, and the TV cannot be propelling this behavior and athletes must not represent any violent attitude by lack of control, whatever the provocation.”

“MMA fighters should, as a matter of urgency, be aware that the behavior inside and outside of the octagons can influence millions of people for better or for worse, and I chose influence for good because MMA also picked this way. Anything outside of that is no longer MMA, [and] definitely doesn’t represent me.”

Sonnen (28-14-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 UFC) are expected to fight in July at UFC 175 after their meeting was postponed for undisclosed reasons. Sonnen, though, recently hinted on Twitter that Silva hasn’t signed his bout agreement and called for a fight with ex-champ Rich Franklin (29-7 MMA, 14-6 UFC).

Whether or not the coaches eventually meet or go their separate ways, their rivalry and subsequent dust-up injected life into this season’s reality series, which features Brazilian middleweight and heavyweight UFC hopefuls and streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Belfort briefly skirmished with Silva when they coached opposite one another on the original “TUF: Brazil,” but no blows were thrown.

Meanwhile, “The Phenom” is waiting for the winner of an upcoming middleweight title bout between champ Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Lyoto Machida (21-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) at UFC 175. Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC) originally was slotted for the title fight but was scratched from the card when the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned TRT.
