When UFC officials declined to sign former Bellator MMA champ Ben Askren, the wrestling standout took his talents to ONE FC. Now “Funky” wants to help the Asia-based promotion become an industry force.
“I’m hoping I can help ONE FC grow into a global power,” Askren told USA TODAY Sports.
Askren, who currently sits at No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, is the only top-10 ranked 170-pounder not fighting in the UFC. But ONE FC provides him a massive stage in Asia, and the company may eventually eye growth outside of its home continent.
Askren believes he can be a huge part of that process.
“They’re going to provide me a huge platform to show my skills,” Askren said.
Askren is set to make his ONE FC debut in May against an opponent yet to be named. Check out the full video to hear Askren’s take on signing with the ONE FC and what he hopes to help the promotion accomplish.
