Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva III? 'Easy payday? Yeah, pretty much,' champ says

SYDNEY – Both fighters have other immediate challenges, but what about a third fight between UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva?

“If that’s what the people want to see, then it’ll happen,” Weidman said on Thursday in response to a fan’s question. “Easy payday? Yeah, pretty much. With all due respect.”

Weidman and Silva, of course, have history. After Silva’s record seven-year title reign, Weidman pulled off the upset and scored a knockout victory in July 2013. Five months later, he defeated the Brazilian again after Silva’s leg snapped while throwing a kick in their rematch.

Weidman made the comments during a Q&A session in Sydney ahead of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 55 event. A fan mentioned a constant source of frustration for the undefeated champ: that his wins were “lucky” because Silva clowned around until he got caught in the first meeting, and then suffered a gruesome injury in the second.

Still, it appears Weidman’s willing to oblige the MMA great if Silva (and the fans) want it.

Of course, such a matchup won’t happen anytime soon. Weidman (12-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) fights top contender Vitor Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC) in UFC 184’s pay-per-view main event on Feb. 28, and Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) returns from a broken leg to fight Nick Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) in UFC 183’s headliner on Jan. 31.

But as Weidman mentions in the above video, which also includes his thoughts on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and his potential involvement in a future Metamoris event, he’s at least willing to consider the possibility.
