Alistair Overeem, Jessica Eye, Michael Chiesa weigh in on UFC's Reebok deal

UFC Q&As aren’t usually the place to discuss serious issues, but one curious fan made things interesting this past week.

The fan put a trio of UFC fighters on the spot prior to this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 65 in Adelaide, South Australia, when he asked Alistair Overeem, Jessica Eye and Michael Chiesa for their thoughts on the payout structure for the promotion’s uniform deal with Reebok.

By then, several fighters in the UFC’s ranks had already spoken out online about the numbers, and some weren’t happy.

The trio looked at each other, unsure of how to respond. Who was going to touch that one?

“I’m kind of excited to not have to worry about this person being upset that their logo looks funny on my leg,” said Eye, ever the eager promoter for the UFC. “We’re here to fight. Look at the NFL, the NBA – look at them. They don’t get a choice.”

Overeem added on, suggesting the UFC is still around because it thinks about things like uniforms as a way to boost the sport’s stature.

“It’s now a worldwide-accepted sport, and for that, I’m actually very happy,” he said.

Chiesa, the winner of “TUF 15,” offered the only moderate counterpoint, lamenting he’ll look more like everyone else when he puts on the Reebok uniform.

“I’m going to miss the individuality of fighting in my cutoff black shorts, because I’m a huge Mike Tyson fan,” he said. “But this is where the sport has to go.”
