UFC on FOX 22 results: Hector Sandoval outpoints Fredy Serrano for first UFC win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Hector Sandoval put Fredy Serrano on the defensive early and kept him there for almost the entirety of their 15-minute fight.

The reward for Sandoval (13-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was a clear unanimous-decision victory over Serrano (3-2 MMA, 2-2) with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27.

The flyweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 22 preliminary card at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional FS1 prelims and the FOX-televised main card.

Sandoval wasted no time carrying the fight to Serrano in this one, mixing in takedowns and heavy right hand counters in the first round, at least one of which seemed to put Serrano on shaky legs.

Sandoval kept that pressure on throughout the fight, meeting Serrano’s attempts at offense with stiff counter-punching and takedowns that quickly turned into guillotine choke attempts.

While Serrano managed to escape the submissions and recover after being hurt by punches, he never managed to transition from defense to offense. He spent most of the fight with his back stuck to the fence, focused on reacting to Sandoval rather than on dictating the action.

As a result, it was an easy one for the judges to call, as all three gave the fight to Sandoval. It was his first UFC win in two tries.

Sandoval’s victory gets him back in the win column after a submission loss to Wilson Reis in July. Serrano has now lost two straight.
