It’s been only about a month since Miesha Tate surprised most in the MMA world by retiring after her UFC 205 loss to Raquel Pennington.
So how’s “Cupcake” been taking it? Apparently pretty well. In fact, just because she stepped away from active MMA competition doesn’t mean she stepped away from competition completely. On Sunday, at Submission Underground 2, she had a grappling match with Jessica Eye, which she won in overtime.
“It was a lot of fun to get back out there and compete,” Tate said after the match, courtesy of MMAjunkie video partner Champions.co. “I still have a competitive streak in myself, and I was having fun. That’s what it’s about. That’s what mixed martial arts is to me – it’s about having fun. The whole time I was here, and warming up – it was all of the fun and none of the pressure. …
“I’m just having fun right now. I’m here, I got to enjoy a night of grappling, I got to do what I love with the jiu-jitsu, and I still have a competitive edge to myself. But I’m just here having fun.”
Whether or not Tate (18-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC), a former UFC women’s bantamweight champ and former Strikeforce titleholder, ever decides to return to MMA remains to be seen. But if she left because it wasn’t fun anymore, it’s clear staying active like she did over the weekend is plenty fun.
