Miesha Tate: 'We Will See More Women's Divisions in the UFC' | MMAWeekly.com

There are only two women’s divisions in the UFC: the strawweight division (115 pounds) and the bantamweight division (135 pounds). There have been women’s bouts at 125 pounds and catchweight fights at 140 pounds, but the promotion only officially has two women’s divisions.

There have been rumblings about the creation of a flyweight division (125 pounds), and Invicta FC champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino wants the featherweight division (145 pounds) to be represented in the UFC. Former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate believes there will be more women’s divisions in time, but not soon.

“Eventually, for sure,” she said when asked about the addition of women’s flyweight and featherweight divisions in the UFC during a recent Q&A in Australia.

UFC president Dana White says there simply aren’t enough women competing at a high level at 145 to justify creating the featherweight division. As far as the flyweight division, that’s a bit more complicated, according to Tate.

Tate - Nunes - Jedrzejczyk - Gadelha“I think 125 makes sense before I 145 because it’s already a fuller division. I think that will come with time, but I think right now that it would thin-out a lot of the 135-pound division, and it would thin-out the 115-pound division,” she explained. “I think they’re trying to really stack 115 and stack 135 and not take from either one to create a 125.”

Although it may not be the right time to create a 125-pound weight class for women, Tate is confident that we’ll eventually see more women’s divisions in the UFC.

“There’s women coming out of the woodwork every single day,” she said. “In time, we will see more divisions in the UFC. I’m sure of it.”
