Charles Oliveira Nearly 10 Pounds Over Weight for UFC Mexico City | MMAWeekly.com

Charles Oliveira didn’t even come close to making weight for Saturday’s event, but his UFC Fight Night Mexico City opponent, Ricardo Lamas, agreed to take the bout anyway.

Oliveira stepped on the scale at Friday’s early official weigh-in for UFC Fight Night 98 weighing 155 pounds. The problem being, his fight with Lamas was slated for featherweight, not lightweight. That put him at 9 pounds over the 146-pound cutoff for their featherweight non-title fight.

Despite Oliveira missing weight so egregiously, Lamas, who made weight at 146 pounds, accepted the fight, according to UFC official Reed Harris, who confirmed the news during MMAJunkie.com’s weigh-in stream.

Charles OliveiraLamas agreeing to take the fight despite such a huge discrepancy likely stems from him recently having his UFC Manila main event bout with BJ Penn canceled just a week out from the fight.

Harris noted that the fight would happen, but Lamas would likely receive more than the standard 20-percent penalty from Oliveira’s show money. That was still being negotiated at the time of publication.

“Ricardo was like, I’m fighting, never even blinked,” said Harris.

Oliveira is also expected to have to meet some sort of weight restriction prior to the fight. That would put a negotiated cap on how much weight Oliveira can gain before stepping in the Octagon with Lamas on Saturday night.
