UFC Fight Night 95 results: Alan Patrick grinds out unanimous decision win over Stevie Ray

BRASILIA, Brazil – In a three-round grappling match, Alan Patrick charged into takedowns and smothered Stevie Ray for an easy decision.

After his first serious submission attempt, Ray (19-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had little answer for Patrick’s (14-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) control and watched time whittle away before inevitably falling short on scorecards.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 95 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of the rest of the card on FS1.

Two of three judges credited Ray for his early work, scoring the fight 29-28. The remaining judge, however, had Patrick pitching a shutout with a tally of 30-27.

From his first charge across the cage, it was clear the fight was going to be a grappling match. Ray gave up a quick takedown and found himself on his back. When Patrick failed to secure the proper position on a subsequent trip, however, Ray wound him in mount and transitioned to an armbar. Hanging on to the limb for dear life, he did a headstand as he cranked on Patrick’s limb. But the Brazilian stayed patient and got free.

A pair of punches gave Patrick dibs on top position in the second round, and this time, there would be no escaping for Ray. A standup gave him a second opportunity, which he used to set up a guillotine choke. But Patrick flipped him over and took the back in a scramble, and it was back to the drawing board.

A kneebar was Ray’s last hope in the third and final round. When that didn’t work, Patrick smothered him against the fence and rode out a kimura attempt, transitioning to a straight armlock to put a stamp on his win.

Patrick now has won two straight in the octagon while Ray suffers his first UFC loss.
