UFC 196 bonuses: Nate Diaz doubles up for $100,000 after upset of McGregor

LAS VEGAS – Miesha Tate, Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor each earned $50,000 bonuses for their efforts at Saturday’s UFC 196 event – and Diaz doubled up with $100,000 total.

Tate and Diaz picked up “Performance of the Night” awards, and Diaz and McGregor took home “Fight of the Night” honors.

UFC President Dana White announced the winners at the post-event press conference, which MMAjunkie attended.

In the main event, Diaz (19-10 MMA, 14-8 UFC) pulled a big upset when he submitted McGregor (19-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC) in the second round with a rear-naked choke. The loss was McGregor’s first in the UFC. He was as much as a 5-1 favorite in the fight, which took place at welterweight despite Diaz being a lightweight and McGregor being the featherweight champion.

Tate (18-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) upset Holly Holm (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) to win the women’s bantamweight title in the co-main event. Holm was more than a 3-1 favorite in the first defense of her belt after beating Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 this past November. Tate had a dominant second round against the champion, but was behind on the scorecards going to the fifth and needed a finish to win. She got one when she took Holm to the ground, then locked in a rear-naked choke. Holm didn’t tap and instead was put to sleep.

UFC 196 took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
