Conor McGregor at welterweight? Meh, champ Robbie Lawler says

BOSTON – It’s quite hard to get UFC welterweight champ Robbie Lawler riled up for anything other than a fight. Even then, it might take him a few rounds to get fired up.

So with talk of UFC featherweight champion and future promoter Conor McGregor moving up to Lawler’s class, you’re not going to get much of a reaction.

“I don’t really get excited,” Lawler said when asked of such a scenario would produce said emotional response.

The champ shrugged his shoulders.

“It’s just how I am,” he continued. “Nothing really gets me riled up too much. I just concentrate on myself. A lot of things could happen; everyone knows that. So I can’t concentrate on all these what-ifs because these what-ifs might never happen, and then I’ve wasted my time. So there you go.”

In any event, McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) needs to overcome a lightweight hurdle when he takes on 155-pound champ Rafael dos Anjos (25-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) at UFC 197 on March 5 in Las Vegas. With the 155-pound belt on the line, 145-pound champ McGregor could become the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold two belts.

Lawler (27-10 MMA, 12-4 UFC), though, isn’t sweating it either way. He does his talking in the cage, and earlier this month, he spoke volumes in an early “Fight of the Year” candidate against former interim titleholder Carlos Condit (30-9 MMA, 7-5 UFC).

Lawler was trending down in the early championship rounds of the UFC 195 headliner when he went for broke in the fifth round and secured a split-call win over Condit. The two could be headed for an immediate rematch if the UFC makes it so.

But that’s another scenario Lawler isn’t going to pore over. If it happens, great. If not, he’ll take whatever else the UFC offers. Simple.
