Ronda Rousey: Holly Holm Rematch Will Determine Everything

No, Ronda Rousey isn’t done yet.

For those who felt she was exposed when Holly Holm knocked her out, and that she should just go away. Sorry, not going to happen; at least, not right away.

In a recent interview with ESPN The Magazine, Rousey has admitted to being “really (expletive) sad,” but not to the point where she’s ready to walk away. She at least wants another crack at Holm before she decides what direction her career and life will take from here.

Holm cracked Rousey with a punch in the first 30 seconds of their fight, splitting her lip and knocking some of her teeth loose. From that point on, Rousey was a shell of herself, stumbling through the fight until a Holm head-kick floored the former champ early in round two.

Ronda Rousey - US Flag“I got hit in that first round. I cut my lip open and knocked a couple of my teeth loose. I was out on my feet from the very beginning,” she told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

“It was like a dumbed-down dreamy version of yourself making decisions. I was just trying to shake myself out of it. I kept saying to myself, ‘You’re okay, keep fighting. You’re okay, keep fighting.’

“I just feel so embarrassed. How I fought after that is such an embarrassing representation of myself.”

It might be easy to curl up in a ball and simply fade away, but that’s not Rousey. Yes, she’s licking her wounds, but who wouldn’t?

Rousey has reached a pinnacle in sports that hardly any athlete, man or woman, has ever reached. And in MMA, no fighter has held such a position as Rousey. Of course, she is grieving after such a demoralizing loss.

Needing a few months to recover from her injuries and to fulfill her obligations outside of the cage, it will be a while before Rousey rematches Holm, but rematch her she will. And for Rousey, that will be what determines her future.

“I guess it’s all going to be determined by what happens in the rematch,” she said. “Everything is going to be determined by that. Either I’ll win and keep going or I won’t and I’ll be done with everything.”
