UFC on FOX 16 results: Joe Lauzon swarms Takanori Gomi, calls his own stoppage

CHICAGO – Joe Lauzon put a beating on Takanori Gomi at UFC on FOX 16. When the referee didn’t step in to save Gomi, Lauzon seemingly called the TKO himself.

The lightweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC on FOX 16 event at United Center in Chicago. It aired on FOX following additional prelims on FOX and UFC Fight Pass.

Gomi (35-11 MMA, 4-6 UFC) opened up the fight with some thudding shots to the body. Lauzon (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) was able to take the fight to the ground, however, and began to look for any way to inflict damage on Gomi, including yanking his leg backward from a seated position. Lauzon then took the back and began to pour on strikes after flattening Gomi out. When referee Herb Dean didn’t jump in to call an end to the action as Gomi appeared to go out, Lauzon simply stood up and walked away, effectively calling the TKO himself.

The odd end to the fight came at the 2:37 mark of Round 1.

The fight was a bounce-back win for Lauzon, who lost via TKO against Al Iaquinta at UFC 183. Lauzon is now 3-1 in his last four fights.

Gomi is now on a two-fight losing skid, having lost to Myles Jury by TKO at UFC Fight Night 52. Gomi has been stopped in five of his six UFC losses.
