Police lapel cam, 911 call: Condoms, pipe, Funyuns, fight shorts in Jon Jones' car

In new audio released by the Albuquerque Police Department, we now can hear the immediate aftermath of the April hit-and-run accident allegedly involving former UFC champion Jon Jones.

Accompanying the audio is a lapel camera video from one of the responding officers showing the inside of the SUV rented to Jones, and allegedly driven by him on April 26 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The camera footage shows officers searching the inside of the Buick SUV, finding rental paperwork with Jones’ name on it, as well as Nevada State Athletic Commission paperwork in his name. Officers also found a pipe typically used for smoking marijuana, additional cash, “a sh-tload of condoms,” fight shorts and a bag of Funyuns, all of which can be seen in the video.

The video also shows an officer interviewing Vanessa Sonnenberg, the pregnant victim, as she sits on a curb following the accident.

When the officers realized the “Jon Jones” on the paperwork was Jones the fighter, one of them remarked, “Well, he’s f-cked. … He almost f-cking killed both these people.”

In the accident, Jones allegedly ran a red light and hit another vehicle driven by a pregnant woman, who broke her arm and wrist in the crash. The impact of the collision caused the woman’s vehicle to hit a third car.

Jones then allegedly fled the scene before returning to grab cash from his vehicle before fleeing again, according to witnesses. The 911 call describes the alleged Jones flee on foot into a gated community.

The next day, after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Jones turned himself in and was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury. He posted $2,500 bail and left the facility.

Later that week, the UFC stripped Jones (21-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) of his light heavyweight title and suspended him indefinitely, yanking him from a scheduled title defense against Anthony Johnson and inserting Daniel Cormier in his place. Cormier went on to win the newly vacant belt at UFC 187 a little more than a week ago.

Jones also had a major sponsorship deal terminated by Reebok, among others. There is no word on if or when Jones will return, and likely won’t be until the legal proceedings surrounding the case play out.
