Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum Likely to Land in Mexico Next June

Mexico might just get to host a fight between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum after all.

UFC President Dana White on Monday said that the eventual match-up between the two heavyweight title holders will land south of the border in 2015.

“Werdum vs. Velasquez, that fight belongs in Mexico,” White said at a press conference in Las Vegas. “That’s Mexico’s fight. That’s where it’s going to happen.”

Velasquez and Werdum were scheduled to fight each other in Mexico City last Saturday at UFC 180. Velasquez, unfortunately, was injured in the weeks ahead of the bout and Werdum instead faced Mark Hunt for the interim heavyweight title. Following Saturday’s pay-per-view, Werdum walked out of the Mexican capital with the interim strap around his waist and a rain check for a future meeting with Velasquez.

White added that he anticipates the UFC’s return to Mexico will happen in June, giving the injured Velasquez seven months to recover from his injury before he has to step in the Octagon. As of now, there are four events currently scheduled for June. UFC 186 is the only pay-per-view scheduled that month, and will likely be the card headlined by Velasquez and Werdum White’s timing works out.
