UFC Fight Night 55 results: Sam Alvey shocks Dylan Andrews in odd knockout finish

SYDNEY – One moment Sam Alvey was just trying not to get thrown as Dylan Andrews latched onto his back.

The next Alvey (24-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was somehow in full mount, raining down punches that left Andrews (17-6 MMA, 2-2 UFC) unconscious at the 2:16 mark of Round 1.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night55 event at Allphones Arena in Sydney. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Andrews seemed to have the advantage early on in this one. He took Alvey down easily in the opening moments, and even briefly claimed full mount. But as Alvey scrambled up to his feet, Andrews committed to the back body lock. As he lifted Alvey for a slam, Alvey hooked his leg onto Andrews’ to stymy it, and as they crashed to the floor Alvey appeared to land directly on Andrews’ head.

The impact made Andrews slow to react as Alvey bounced up into full mount and unleashed a barrage of punches that left Andrews limp. As Alvey confirmed in the post-fight interview with UFC commentator Dan Hardy, it was the attempted slam that proved to be the opening he needed.

“I fell on his head,” Alvey said. “As he took me down I landed on him. I felt him loosen, I turned, and I got the quick KO.”

With the win, Alvey bounces back from his first UFC loss in August. Andrews has now lost two straight.
