WSOF 14 Results: Jake Shields Subs Ryan Ford, Earns Title Shot | MMAWeekly.com

Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields made an impressive World Series of Fighting debut at WSOF 14: Shields vs. Ford on Saturday night in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

WSOF Canadian welterweight champ Ryan Ford dropped Shields early in the opening frame, but Shields quickly recovered and started working to bring Ford down to the canvas.

It took a couple attempts, but he eventually got Ford down, although he didn’t remain there for long. Shields then sent him back to the floor by a hip toss takedown.

Ford turned to try and escape, but Shields took his back, and after much effort, eventually sunk a rear naked choke for the finish.

The victory puts Shields in line for a WSOF welterweight title shot in his next fight. He will face the winner of the fight between current champion Rousimar Palhares and challenger Jon Fitch.

Heading into their heavyweight championship fight, Smealinho Rama said that he felt Derrick Mehmen’s skillset was too basic and wouldn’t compare to his own. Rama was right.

He landed a couple hard kicks early. After a failed takedown attempt, he unleashed a relentless onslaught of punches that eventually sent Mehmen to the canvas, scoring a TKO stoppage less than a minute into the fight.

With the victory, Rama became the inaugural WSOF heavyweight champion.
