Video: With UFC 178 looming, Jon Jones stitched up for cut over left eye

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has suffered a cut above his left eye with about two months left before his UFC 178 title defense against Daniel Cormier.

“Bones” revealed the cut on Thursday, posting a video on his official Instagram account that showed him receiving a number of stitches to patch up the wound. He did not state how or when the cut was sustained.

Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) meets Cormier (15-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in the main event of UFC 178 on Sept. 27 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

The contest will mark Jones’ first bout in “Sin City” since UFC 126 in February 2011. He defeated Ryan Bader by second-round submission at that event to earn his crack at the light heavyweight belt. He would take the belt from Mauricio Rua at UFC 128 just one month later, and has reeled off a record seven consecutive title defenses since.

While the 27-year-old titleholder still has about two months before his highly anticipated bout with Cormier, the cut likely will force him to take some time away from full-contact training.
