Alexander Gustafsson has not split from Alliance MMA. | Anton Gurevich/Sherdog.com
Andreas Michael, head coach to the Swedish contender, told Sherdog.com Friday that he and Gustafsson will soon relocate to San Diego, Calif., to begin their camp for the title tilt.
“All that talk last year was just talk. There was no split,” says Michael. “Alliance MMA is one of the world’s top training centers. It’s a great place to prepare for a fight like this. We were happy with how the training camp for Jimi Manuwa went -- that one we did all in Sweden. We’ve just decided to do this one at Alliance.”
Gustafsson faced Jones at UFC 165 in September last year and gave the champion his hardest title defense to date, taking him the distance before losing a close decision.
The result caused controversy, and initially the UFC wanted to stage an immediate rematch. Instead, Jones faced Glover Teixeira, while Gustafsson stayed busy with the fight against Manuwa in March.
Now the two are finally set to rematch a year on from their first meeting in an encounter that, if it resembles their first meeting, will be a “Fight of the Year” contender when 2014 closes out.
